In the age of sailing ships, mariners closely watched the weather, wind and water. Even on a clear day the water could be unpredictable. Old salts knew that wave can get big. when the wind blows over a distance (fetch) seas can build and the chance of a rogue wave increases. Towering over the sails, a rogue wave could sink a ship in an instant. They called these giants "Graybeard".
