In the days before meteorological forecasting sailors got their weather forecast by reading the sky, the water and the wind.

Now, to predict tomorrow's sailing weather we pour over wind statistics, pressure trends, precip forecasts, synoptic charts and satellite images. Yet, who among us hasn't studied this wealth of weather information and in the end glanced up at the evening sky. "Red sky at night, sailors delight, red sky in the morning, sailors take warning."
